Description
Devín castle, one of the oldest castles in Slovakia that was likely first mentioned in written sources in 864.
The site has been settled since the Neolithic Age and fortified since the Bronze and Iron Age and later by Celts and Romans.
It's here patron saints Cyril and Methodius started their mission in 863. They developed the first alphabet to be used for Slavonic manuscripts, translated the Bible and wrote the first Slavic Civil Code, which was used in Great Moravia.
The castle witnessed the glory and fall of Great Moravia and was blown up by Napoleon’s army in 1809 as part of the regional military neutralization.
On the left side of the slope you can see a Gothic portal to the tunnel cave that passes through the entire castle hill.
The ancient name of this castle - Dowina comes from the Slavic word deva - a girl.
