Description
Pyx Chamber door at Westminster Abbey. This chamber was used as a treasury for the monastery and for the British crown.
In the late 13th century it was used by Edward I as a royal treasury and was considered to be the most secure storage place possible.
In 1303 the Chamber was robbed, and suspicion fell on the monks of Westminster Abbey. The Abbot and 48 monks were taken to the Tower of London and questioned at length.
The culprit was eventually found to be Richard Pudlicote, a gentleman of Oxfordshire. Pudlicote was found with some of the stolen goods in his possession, and other pieces were discovered in pawn shops around the capital. He was sentenced to death, and transported from the Tower of London in a wheelbarrow to Tothill Lane, where he was hanged.
An apocryphal story was circulated that Pudlicote's skin was flayed from his body and fixed to the treasury door as a warning to potential thieves.
