Description
Illuminated Grote Markt, the central square of Brussels, Belgium, which is considered as one of the most beautiful squares in Europe, during the Flower Carpet festival.
The Flower Carpet is a biennial event in Brussels in which volunteers from around Belgium convene at the Grand Place to weave a carpet-like tapestry out of colorful begonias. Nearly a million flowers are required to create the ephemeral 1,800 square meters (19,000 square feet) carpet.
“Guanajuato, cultural pride of Mexico” was the theme of the 21st edition of the Flower Carpet in 2018. This time, in addition to the begonias, the carpet included dahlias, the national flower of Mexico.
Just like Brussels, Guanajuato state in Central Mexico has a rich tradition in tapestry. The annual highlight is “La Octava Noche” in the southern city of Uriangato, where the locals decorate kilometers of streets with carpets of colored sawdust. It is the most important event for ephemeral art in the center of Mexico.
