Description
A wall lantern at the Warming Kitchen of Le Petit Trianon, a small chateau located on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles in France.
Like most other royal residences the food for the royal tables were not cooked in the residence itself - instead the food would be warmed in the Warming Kitchen and then brought in to the royals and nobles staying at the Petit Trianon. Especially Madame de Pompadour resented the smell and noise that normally comes from a kitchen so she certainly did not want to change this part of the architecture.
In 1758 Louis XV decided to build a new chateau in the middle of his Versailles gardens, which he had been working on for more than a decade. He commissioned royal architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel to build a new royal residence large enough to house the king and some of his entourage. With the Petit Trianon, Gabriel produced a manifesto for the neo-classical movement – a perfect example of the ‘Greek style’ that was spreading across Europe.
Originally built for Madame de Pompadour, it ultimately became 19 year old Marie Antoinette’s exclusive residence, which became her refuge from the demands of formal ‘court life’ and her royal responsibilities.
During the French Revolution the Petit Trianon became a hostel, but. Napoleon restored the palace and gardens to their former glory, first for his sister Pauline and later for the Empress Marie-Louise, his second wife. In 1867 the Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, converted the Petit Trianon into a museum dedicated to the memory of Marie-Antoinette.
