Description
Nestled behind the Chateau de Versailles there is a palace called Le Petit Trianon, meshed with a dreamy little hamlet and English gardens created for the Queen Marie Antoinette.
Originally built for Madame de Pompadour, Petit Trianon ultimately became a 19 year old Marie Antoinette’s exclusive residence, which was her refuge from the demands of formal ‘court life’ and her royal responsibilities.
Her reconfiguration of the Trianon gardens can be divided into two distinct phases.
The first, starting in 1777, corresponds to the creation of the English Gardens.
Subsequently, in 1783, she tasked Richard Mique with extending the gardens to the north and building a whole model village around an artificial lake.
Work began in the summer of 1783 and was completed in 1786.
The Belvédère du Petit Trianon, or the Pavillon du Rocher (because of the big artificial rock formation next to it), this octagonal garden pavilion is located in the English garden on a small artificial hill at Petit Trianon. It was built by the architect Richard Mique in the years 1778-1781 as a music salon for Marie Antoinette.
The interior is richly decorated with arabesques painted in oil on stucco, and the floor is a beautiful mosaic of white, red, green, and bleu turquin marble.
The queen used the Belvedere as a lounge in the summer time, with its many doors and windows allowing the light to flood in and creating the impression of an open-air living room.
In fine weather, the pavilion was furnished with eight armchairs - and eight chairs, that were sold off during the Revolution; just one has been returned to Versailles.
