Description
Nestled behind the Chateau de Versailles there is a palace called Le Petit Trianon, meshed with a dreamy little hamlet created for the Queen Marie Antoinette.
Originally built for Madame de Pompadour, Petit Trianon ultimately became a 19 year old Marie Antoinette’s exclusive residence, which was her refuge from the demands of formal ‘court life’ and her royal responsibilities.
Her reconfiguration of the Trianon gardens can be divided into two distinct phases.
The first, starting in 1777, corresponds to the creation of the English Gardens. Subsequently, in 1783, she tasked Richard Mique with extending the gardens to the north and building a whole model village around an artificial lake. Work began in the summer of 1783 and was completed in 1786.
The Queen’s Hamlet does not belong to any particular style, combining as it does various influences from rural architecture, but it does succeed in creating a sense of aesthetic coherency.
The cottages are set on the eastern bank of the lake, arranged in a crescent formation which is ideally viewed from across the water.
This is the roof of the Dovecote, or pigeon house, one of six buildings devoted to agricultural pursuits. The building and its hen house were home to several pairs of pigeons, laying hens, roosters, and chickens chosen especially by the Queen, not forgetting the person who looked after the birds, who lived on the ground floor. Like each building in the Hamlet, the pigeon house had its own vegetable garden. Artichokes, cauliflowers, green beans, black beans and peas were grown in horticultural experiments.
