Description
Nestled behind the Chateau de Versailles there is a palace called Le Petit Trianon, meshed with a dreamy little hamlet created for the Queen Marie Antoinette.
Originally built for Madame de Pompadour, Petit Trianon ultimately became a 19 year old Marie Antoinette’s exclusive residence, which was her refuge from the demands of formal ‘court life’ and her royal responsibilities.
During the French Revolution the Petit Trianon became a hostel, while the gardens narrowly escaped being divided into separate allotments. Napoleon restored the palace and gardens to their former glory, first for his sister Pauline and later for the Empress Marie-Louise, his second wife. In 1867 the Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, converted the Petit Trianon into a museum dedicated to the memory of Marie-Antoinette.
The Pavillon Frais, also called Salon Frais (Cool Salon) or Pavillon du Treillage, was constructed under the reign of Louis XV between 1751 and 1753. It was designed by the renowned Ange-Jacques Gabriel, "Architecte du Roi", who is considered by many the greatest architect of the 18th century. Amongst his exceptional body of work are the marvelous Versailles Opera and the Place de la Concorde.
The Pavillon Frais was used on warm days as a private dining room by the Queen and ladies of the court. The King also dined there often.
Razed under Napoleon I because of its state of decrepitude, this gorgeous pavilion was restored only in 2010.
