Description
Outstanding interior of St. Ludwig's Church, or Ludwigskirche, the main Catholic church of Darmstadt, Germany.
Built between 1822 and 1827 by architect Georg Moller it is a large one-dome structure with a height of about 105 feet and a diameter of around 130 feet. Inspired by the Pantheon in Rome it also has a 24 feet opening in the roof which lets natural light illuminate the interior. Destroyed in 1944 during World War II, it took until 2005 to rebuilt the church in its original splendor.
The church which got its name from French King Ludwig IX popularly known as the cheese bell or "Kaasglock".
