Description
Porta Nigra, a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany, build around 170 AD.
The name Porta Nigra originated in the Middle Ages due to the black pollution patina on the gray sandstone; the original Roman name has not been preserved.
The Greek monk Simeon, who had himself walled up in the eastern tower as a hermit after 1028. After his death in 1035, he was buried inside the gate and made a saint.
