Description
Back of Saint Michel's church, a gothic Roman Catholic church, and Saint Michael’s bridge over river Lys in Ghent, Belgium.
Documents from 1105 to indicate the existence on site of a chapel dedicated to St. Michael, which was subordinate to another parish. The building was twice destroyed by fire early in the twelfth century and rebuilt. In 1147 she was recognized as an independent parish Church. The construction of the present late Gothic Church was probably begun in 1440 and took place in two stages, separated by a large interval.
Part of the Church was destroyed in 1578 the Calvinists in 1579, and the restoration of the Church began only in 1623.
