Description
One of the cantilevered spiral staircases in the original antebellum (existing before the American Civil War) part of the Alabama State Capitol, designed and built by Horace King (1807 - 1885), a former slave who rose to become one of the south’s best known architects and bridge builders. King was hired to frame the current capitol after the previous capitol building burned down in 1849.
