Description
Bratislava, Slovakia, is the one of the smallest capitals of Europe.
It has 5 bridges, here is one of them - the Old Bridge, the first bridge over the Danube river. The bridge has had many names, such as Bridge of Emperor Franz Josef, Stefanik’s Bridge or Bridge of the Red Army. Emperor Franz Josef opened it for the first time on 30th December 1890.
They built it using exclusively domestic materials from Austria-Hungary. The bridge had served for 45 years before being blown up by the retreating German army in 1945. The commies reconstructed it in 1946.
The most interesting fact is that after 124 years the bridge has recently been reconstructed, it was closed in 2008 and dismantled, then rebuilt and reopened in 2016. It now includes a tram track connecting the historic Old Town with Petrzalka, the largest borough of Bratislava, and serves both pedestrians and cyclists. The new Old Bridge now has a distinctive beautiful green color.
First place in the "Urban Perspective" contest sponsored by "Promote Together" group 03/05/2022.
